What we do

Working as part of Bournemouth Borough Council, Dorset County Council and the Borough of Poole, we want to achieve Prevention at Scale – helping as many people as possible stay healthier for longer; which is a key aspiration of Dorset’s Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP).

Making Prevention at Scale a reality involves coordinated action across the whole system, so that means us working across multiple partnerships, organisations, groups and communities. In taking a strategic approach to our work we support Dorset Health and Wellbeing Board, Bournemouth and Poole Health and Wellbeing Board and the Accountable Care System for Dorset.

We also commission several public health services that include:

  • Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services
  • LiveWell Dorset
  • NHS Health Checks
  • Sexual Health Services

We put information and evidence at the heart of everything we do. Our work is guided by the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) and the Annual Director of Public Health Report updates progress and identifies key challenges in the year ahead.

The Public Health Dorset team is hosted by Dorset County Council and governed by the Joint Public Health Board, a committee comprising members of the three accountable local authorities.

Our team

The Public Health Dorset team is made up of Director of Public Health, Public Health Consultants, Heads of Programmes, Health Programme Advisors, Health Programme Advisors, Public Health Analysts, Health Economists and Business Support.

Our main office base is in Dorchester. To enable us to work effectively across all three councils, we also have smaller office bases in Bournemouth and Poole.

We aspire to be a high performing, professional team and we are fully committed to improving population health in Dorset. At the same time, we’re a friendly bunch and we try not to take ourselves too seriously, we clearly don’t have all the answers (who does?) and in a world of complexity, we’re always wanting to learn.

Prevention at Scale

A key aspiration for Dorset’s Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) is Prevention at Scale. It is also the way we summarise our strategy for public health work across Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole. We’ve always worked to prevent poor health, prevention is better than cure, right? But by working with partners across the whole system of services, organisations, groups and communities, we want to see prevention at scale. In other words, adopting new ways of working that become so widespread, we can see improvements in the health of whole populations. We are also passionate about reducing inequalities. Systematic variation in the health outcomes of people on different levels of income and with different social backgrounds is simply unfair; so, whilst we aim for scale, we also focus on the way the system supports people with greater health needs.

The Prevention at Scale presentation for councillors provides an overview of prevention, the rationale for Prevention at Scale as part of the STP, and an outline of local challenges in Dorset.

Dorset’s Sustainability and Transformation Plan is an ambitious plan to improve the quality of care; create financially sustainable and efficient services; and improve population health and wellbeing, whilst reducing inequalities in health outcomes. Prevention at Scale is one of the main portfolios.

Health and Wellbeing Boards

The local Health and Wellbeing Boards act as a forum in which key leaders from the local health and care system can work together to improve the health and wellbeing of their population. We work with two boards, Dorset Health and Wellbeing Board and Bournemouth and Poole Health and Wellbeing Board. Both boards have a lead role in delivering Prevention at Scale.
