What we do

Public Health Dorset provides a shared service across Dorset Council and BCP Council. Our focus is to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of our population with an emphasis on reducing inequalities in the health outcomes of those living and working in our local communities.

Our aim is to help as many people as possible stay healthier for longer. We do this through

  1. Commissioning specific public health services and,
  2. Taking a health in all policies partnership approach.

Health in all policies is about recognising the potential public health benefits that can be achieved through council services. We work with teams looking at embedding prevention approaches where they can.

Our commissioned services include:

  • Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services
  • LiveWell Dorset
  • NHS Health Checks
  • Sexual Health Services
  • Children’s public health nursing

We have an annual business plan which is monitored by the Joint Public Health Board (JPHB), a committee comprising members from BCP Council and Dorset Council. The JPHB has a role in overseeing how we spend the Public Health Grant and monitoring our performance. We also support two health and wellbeing boards – Dorset and BCP.

Our work is guided by the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) and the Annual Director of Public Health Report which updates progress and identifies key challenges in the year ahead.

Our team

The Public Health Dorset team is made up of Director of Public Health, Public Health Consultants, Heads of Programmes, Health Programme Advisors, Health Programme Advisors, Public Health Analysts, Health Economists and Business Support.

Our main office base is in Dorchester, we also have smaller office bases in Bournemouth and Poole.

We aspire to be a high performing, professional team and we are fully committed to improving population health in Dorset. At the same time, we’re a friendly bunch and we try not to take ourselves too seriously, we clearly don’t have all the answers (who does?) and in a world of complexity, we’re always wanting to learn.

Prevention at Scale

Our Dorset

This is the name of Dorset’s Integrated Care System. It’s a partnership of local councils (including Public Health Dorset), NHS services, emergency services, voluntary and community groups.

The Our Dorset website www.ourdorset.nhs.uk has more information along with some great examples of the kind of work already happening across the county.

Prevention at scale

We lead this programme which is part of Dorset’s Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP).

Making Prevention at Scale (PAS) a reality involves coordinated action across all partners so that projects, initiatives and services can be applied across large areas and communities.

We are also passionate about reducing inequalities. Systematic variation in the health outcomes of people on different levels of income and with different social backgrounds is simply unfair; so, whilst we aim for scale, we also focus on the way the system supports people with greater health needs.

Health and Wellbeing Boards

The local Health and Wellbeing Boards act as a forum in which key leaders from the local health and care system can work together to improve the health and wellbeing of their population. We work with two boards, Dorset Health and Wellbeing Board and Bournemouth and Poole Health and Wellbeing Board. Both boards have a lead role in delivering Prevention at Scale.
