Emotional Health and Wellbeing through Physical Activity – A Whole School Approach

Public Health Dorset has been working with the Dorset Head Teacher Alliance (HTA), a partnership between schools and both county and regional stakeholders in school PE, Sport and physical activity, to design and develop a project which builds on the strong evidence for physical activity improving attainment, achievement and emotional wellbeing. Recently the HTA presented to the Health and Wellbeing Board the evidence for taking a Whole School Approach (WSA) and was successful in securing investment from the Prevention at Scale programme.

The Whole School Approach project team have defined the project using principles from Participatory Budgeting, this means that schools themselves are directly involved in designing and developing projects which they believe will impact positively on student wellbeing. It is non-prescriptive and allows schools to design a project to meet their unique school community needs that:

  • Builds scale or increases pace of change
  • Develops sustainable ways of working (potentially match funded)
  • Builds partnership and engagement
  • Demonstrates what works through robust evaluation

Schools are invited to submit a proposal to apply for investment in developing existing or new opportunity which:

  • goes beyond offering further PE or sport in school, purchasing more equipment, having more coaching or offering more clubs
  • creatively work with a range of partners to take an inclusive and Whole School Approach to building an ethos and culture of movement and activity
  • is innovative and creative to meet the individual needs of the school community
  • identify opportunities for physical activity, integrated within the school day or curriculum which demonstrably impact on emotional health and wellbeing
  • should be inclusive for all abilities and levels of interest to make it easy to participate within everyday routines
  • have opportunities to explore how low and high impact physical activity can be effectively used as a tool to manage situations that cause anxiety or stress and to increase students’ own ability to experience calm and positive wellbeing
  • include staff, children or young people, parents and carers, and school governors in the considerations, design and development

This is an opportunity to think creatively – change indoor or outdoor environments or create new cultures, ethos and behaviours – to meet emotional and mental wellbeing needs for your school population through the use of low or high-level impact physical activity, with prevention at scale and sustainability.
