About us
What we do
Public Health Dorset provides a shared service across Dorset Council and BCP Council.
Our aim is to help as many people as possible stay healthier for longer. We do this through commissioning public health services and taking a health in all policies partnership approach.
Health in all policies is about recognising the potential public health benefits that can be achieved through council services. We work with teams looking at embedding prevention approaches where they can.
Our commissioned services include:
- Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services
- LiveWell Dorset
- NHS Health Checks
- Sexual Health Services
- Children’s public health nursing
We have an annual business plan which is monitored by the Joint Public Health Board (JPHB), a committee comprising members from BCP Council and Dorset Council. The JPHB has a role in overseeing how we spend the Public Health Grant and monitoring our performance. We also support two health and wellbeing boards – Dorset and BCP.
Our work is guided by the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) and the Annual Director of Public Health Report which monitors progress and identifies key challenges in the year ahead.
Prevention at scale
We lead this programme which is part of Dorset’s Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP).
Making Prevention at Scale a reality involves coordinated action across all partners so that projects, initiatives and services can be applied across large areas and communities.

Our Dorset
This is the name of Dorset’s Integrated Care System. It’s a partnership of local councils (including Public Health Dorset), NHS services, emergency services, voluntary and community groups.
The Our Dorset website www.ourdorset.nhs.uk has more information along with some great examples of the kind of work already happening across the county.
