Dorset Council is proud to present “In My Shoes”, a powerful and moving exhibition created by Dorset’s care experienced young people to mark National Care Leavers’ Month.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 25 October to Friday 7 November at Dorset Museum in Dorchester and the exhibition invites the public to explore the personal stories, creativity, and resilience of young people who have experienced the care system.

Through a compelling collection of film, photography, and decorated shoes, visitors will gain insight into the lives of the young people and the challenges they’ve overcome.

Each piece in the exhibition reflects the individuality and strength of the contributors, highlighting how they’ve challenged the stigma often associated with being in care. “In My Shoes” is not only a tribute to their journeys but also a celebration of their talents, aspirations, and future opportunities.

“Every shoe in this exhibition tells a story — mine included. It’s not just about where I’ve been, but where I’m going. Being part of ‘In My Shoes’ helped me realise that my experiences don’t define me — they’ve shaped me into someone strong, creative, and proud of who I am. ‘Rising As Me’ means owning my journey and showing others that care leavers have so much to offer.”
From a care-experienced contributor, Dorset.

Cllr Clare Sutton, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Skills at Dorset Council, said:

“This exhibition is a powerful reminder of the resilience, creativity and strength of our care experienced young people.  ‘In My Shoes’ gives a voice to young people whose stories deserve to be heard and celebrated. We are proud to support National Care Leavers’ Week and encourage everyone to visit the exhibition and learn more about the experiences and aspirations of Dorset’s care-experienced young people.”

Entry to the exhibition is free, and all are welcome.

You will also have the opportunity to step into the world of fostering on Saturday 25 October and Saturday 1 November, from 10am to midday at the Museum for a warm and welcoming drop-in session with coffee, cake, and conversation.

This isn’t just a chat—it’s a chance to connect with people who’ve lived the experience. We’ll be joined by someone who has been through the care system in Dorset, and a foster carer will be with us too. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, hear real stories, and explore what fostering could look like for you—whether you're just curious or seriously considering a role in fostering.

November marks the launch of National Care Leavers Month 2025, a powerful, month-long celebration dedicated to recognising and uplifting care-experienced young people across the UK.

The theme, “Rising As Me”, was co-created by care leavers and reflects the journey of overcoming challenges, embracing transformation, and discovering personal identity.

Throughout the month, organisations, local authorities, and individuals will host events, share stories, and offer opportunities that empower care experienced young people to thrive. From creative showcases and workshops to employment support and community engagement, the campaign aims to amplify voices and foster lasting change.
