Schools across the county are encouraged to help shape the future of their communities, as Dorset Council launches a series of school activity packs and lesson plans designed to spark curiosity and conversation around what makes a great place to live.

The resources, tailored for both primary and secondary schools, support the Dorset Local Plan and Local Transport Plan consultations. They encourage students to think creatively and critically about planning, transport, sustainability, and the kind of places they want to live in as they grow up.

Cllr Shane Bartlett, Cabinet Member for Planning and Emergency Planning said:

“It’s vital that we hear from young people, not just because these plans will shape their future, but because they bring fresh perspectives and bold ideas,”

“We’re especially keen to hear from sixth formers, who are beginning to think about their own futures.

“But we also want to engage our youngest residents and their families, because planning for the future starts with listening to everyone.”

Schools across Dorset will be contacted directly by the Council with further details, but all resources will also be available online for easy access.

Schools are encouraged to share feedback from classroom discussions with Dorset Council’s planning teams, helping ensure young voices are counted in the consultations.

To support this, an easy-read version of the plans will be provided, making it simpler for younger students to understand and respond. Sixth formers will be invited to take part in the full consultation survey, giving them the opportunity to share their views in depth.

Councillor Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place said:

"We know transport is important to young people, as they want their independence to go and see friends without having to rely on lifts from their parents and carers."

“We want to hear directly from young people about what’s working, what’s not, and what they need for their future. Their insights are essential to building a better-connected Dorset.”

The Dorset Local Plan and Local Transport Plan consultations close on 13 October. Dorset Council is encouraging everyone from school children to parents, teachers and all residents to help shape the future of our county.
