Dorset secures £2.3 million to expand Family Hubs

Families across Dorset will soon benefit from better support services thanks to £2.3 million in funding from the Department for Education (DfE). The investment, spread over the next three years, will enable Dorset Council to grow and enhance its network of family hubs, making it easier for parents and carers to access vital help from pregnancy through to age 19 - or 25 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

What’s changing?

  • Three new family hubs will open in Blandford, Portland Hospital, and Weymouth Central (WOAC) in 2026.
  • Dorset’s existing eight hubs—in Bridport, Dorchester, Ferndown, Swanage, Wareham, Littlemoor, Sturminster Newton and Wimborne—will continue to deliver services, with expanded programmes for 3–4-year-olds.
  • All hubs will be rebranded as Best Start Family Hubs, reflecting their focus on early years and connecting families with the support they need to thrive.

The family hubs provide a welcoming space for families to access health services, parenting support, and community resources—all under one roof. The funding will strengthen partnerships with health providers and voluntary organisations, ensuring families get the right help at the right time.

Cllr Clare Sutton, Dorset Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said:

“This funding is a real boost for families in Dorset and will make it easier for parents and carers to find the help they need, when they need it, all in one place and closer to home.

By working together with health and community partners, we’re creating hubs that truly put children and families first and give children the best possible start in life.”
