New Family History Surgery Launches at Dorset History Centre
Dorset Council is pleased to announce the launch of the Family History Surgery at the Dorset History Centre, which began on Friday 9 January 2026.
Held every Friday afternoon from 1pm to 4pm, the Family History Surgery offers 1 hour one‑to‑one sessions with a trained genealogist volunteer. Whether you're just beginning your family history journey or need support with a tricky branch of your tree, these sessions offer tailored guidance to help.
Sessions are free and can be booked in advance. These are already scheduled through to late February 2026, with slots available at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm each Friday. To book a session, please visit the Family History Surgery - Dorset Council. Alternatively, you can book by calling 01305 250550 or emailing archives@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk.
The sessions take place at the Dorset History Centre, a key resource for anyone interested in exploring Dorset’s rich historical archives. By drawing upon expertise from our volunteer genealogist, we aim to inspire and support residents in uncovering their family stories and connecting with the county’s heritage.
This initiative forms part of Dorset Council’s commitment to preserving and promoting our local heritage whilst encouraging community engagement with history.
Cllr Ryan Hope, Portfolio Holder for Customer, Culture and Community Engagement, said:
“The Dorset History Centre holds a wealth of records that help tell the story of our county and the people who live here. The new Family History Surgery is a great way to support residents in exploring that history for themselves. Whether someone is just starting out or needs help with more detailed research, these sessions will offer valuable, friendly guidance. I’m pleased to see this new opportunity encouraging more people to engage with our shared heritage.”
