Some road surface work to be paused

Some road surfacing treatments planned for Dorset this year will now be deferred to spring/summer 2026, due to seasonal constraints and programme delays.

All roads that were scheduled for micro-surfacing treatment but cannot be completed this year will be inspected. Those showing signs of deterioration will be patched or fully resurfaced before winter. Roads not requiring immediate repair will be treated next year.

We will conclude this year's micro-surfacing programme in early November. Continuing works into colder, wetter weather risks treatment failure and further disruption for residents, so this decision has been taken to protect road quality and minimise inconvenience.

Micro-surfacing is a preventative treatment applied to residential roads. It seals the surface, improves texture, and helps prevent water damage, extending the life of the road and keeping it in good condition.

Cllr Jon Andrews, Cabinet Member for Place Services (which includes Highways), said:

“We regret that we are unable to complete our full preventative micro-surfacing programme this year, and this is disappointing for everyone.

“Micro-surfacing must be carried out before winter sets in, and unfortunately, circumstances have led to delays at some sites.

“We are inspecting all scheduled roads and can reassure residents that those in need of immediate repairs will be or patched this year .

“This is not an ideal situation, but we are committed to maintaining Dorset’s roads to a high standard. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding.”

Local councillors and parish/town councils are being informed of affected roads in their areas. Advance signage will be placed at locations where work is due to take place.
