Purbeck locality has the smallest population (approximately 32,500) of the 13 Dorset localities. The population is older than that of Dorset overall and is centred largely in rural villages and small to medium sized market towns (e.g. Swanage, Wareham). Swanage also has a significantly higher proportion of people providing unpaid care than the England average.
